The Great Migration is one of the most spectacular natural events on the planet. Each year, over 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, embark on a circular journey through the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem in search of fresh grazing and water.

This incredible journey covers approximately 1,800 miles and is driven by the rains. The migration is a continuous cycle that has been occurring for centuries, creating one of nature most breathtaking displays.

Key Stages of the Migration

The migration follows a predictable pattern:

  • December-April: Southern Serengeti and Ngorongoro Conservation Area
  • May-July: Western Corridor and Grumeti River
  • August-October: Northern Serengeti and Maasai Mara
  • November: Return to southern Serengeti

The best time to witness this spectacle is between July and October when the herds cross the Mara River in Kenya.
